Root canal therapy involves removal of the pulp of the tooth. This is the tissue inside the tooth consisting of blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue. Teeth have one to four canals depending on the number of roots.
If the pulp is diseased or injured, it is unable to repair itself and loses vitality. It may even become infected and form an abscess. Common causes of pulp death are deep decay or cavity, cracks or fractures in the tooth, or traumatic injury.
Treatment involves removal of the dead or diseased tissue, cleaning, and shaping of the canals. The prepared canals can now be filled with a biocompatible material and cement (“post and core”), sealing the root canal. Finally, a crown will be placed to restore the tooth to useful function.
The Benefits Include:
- Avoiding extraction
- Preserving the tooth
- Avoiding high-replacement costs
- Preserving bone around the tooth
