Dental implants are a type of prosthetic teeth which replace your original teeth after they have been removed from your mouth. Implants are considered the ideal replacement for missing teeth, as they replace both the roots and the crowns of your teeth to fully restore your smile, oral health and oral function.
Implants have three main parts – an implant post, an abutment and an implant restoration. The implant post replaces the tooth root, anchoring the tooth to your jawbone and performing the same functions as your original tooth in stimulating your supporting bone to keep it healthy and provide a stable foundation for your teeth. The abutment is placed on top of the dental implant and acts as a connector between the post and the restoration, holding the restoration in place to ensure it remains stable. The implant restoration replaces the crown of the tooth to restore your smile. Depending on how many teeth you are replacing, your restoration may be a single crown, a bridge or a denture.
Before providing you with an implant, our dentist will meet with you to determine if you are a good candidate for this treatment. Almost everyone is a candidate for dental implants, and as long as your mouth is healthy you should be able to receive an implant without any complications. If your exam reveals a problem, such as gum disease or tooth decay, our dentist will need to provide you with treatment for that condition before you can receive an implant. In some cases, a bone grafting procedure may be needed to ensure that your jawbone is dense enough to support your teeth and implant.
When you receive an implant, your treatment process will begin with an implant placement surgery. This will involve surgically inserting the implant post into your jawbone. A period of healing will then be allowed so that the post can integrate with your jawbone. After this healing period our dentist will design and create your implant restoration to restore the post and complete your treatment.
Your dental implant is designed to be a permanent replacement for your missing tooth. However, it requires the same care as your original teeth – brushing and flossing daily and visiting our dentist regularly for preventive care. Please make sure to practice good oral hygiene at home and visit our office regularly to receive the care you need.
